When a physician tells me which system they're joining, that single fact reshapes almost the entire home search — which neighborhoods make sense, what commute times actually look like, and sometimes even which school districts matter, since satellite campuses are scattered well outside the Texas Medical Center now. Here's the honest lay of the land across Houston's major systems, from someone who spent years on the clinical side before I ever sold a house.

Memorial Hermann — The Largest by Bed Count

Memorial Hermann is the biggest not-for-profit system in Southeast Texas, with more than 260 care sites and roughly 4,400 licensed acute care beds across owned and joint-venture facilities. The flagship Texas Medical Center campus is the primary teaching hospital for McGovern Medical School, but the system's footprint is genuinely metro-wide — Memorial City, Southwest, Northeast in Humble, Sugar Land, Cypress, and more. If you're joining Memorial Hermann, the real question isn't "how far from the Medical Center" — it's which specific campus, since a Cypress-based role and a TMC-based role point buyers toward completely different sides of town.

HCA Houston Healthcare — For-Profit, Rapidly Expanding

HCA is the second-largest system by bed count, headquartered in Nashville but with deep local roots — many of its Houston facilities are former independent hospitals it's acquired over the years (Clear Lake Regional, Conroe Regional, Kingwood Medical, and others now carry the HCA Houston Healthcare name). HCA has been expanding aggressively, including a $60 million expansion at its Pearland campus. If you're joining HCA, ask specifically which legacy facility you're at, since the culture and physician experience can vary meaningfully between a longtime HCA flagship and a recently acquired community hospital.

Houston Methodist — The Academic Flagship

Houston Methodist's flagship hospital sits in the Texas Medical Center and has ranked nationally in ten medical specialties including cardiovascular surgery and organ transplants. The system runs eight community hospitals beyond the flagship, and it's been investing heavily outside the core TMC campus — a new $685 million Cypress hospital that opened in 2025 is already filing plans for a $50 million expansion. If your role is at the flagship, TMC-adjacent living (West University, Braeswood Place, Bellaire) genuinely makes sense. If you're at one of the community campuses, that commute logic doesn't apply, and I'd rather run your specific numbers than assume.

CHI St. Luke's Health — Cardiovascular Reputation, Multi-Campus

CHI St. Luke's, anchored by Baylor St. Luke's Medical Center, carries a strong national reputation specifically in cardiovascular care. The system runs a multicampus strategy including sites at McNair and in the Texas Medical Center core, so again — confirm your actual assigned location before assuming a TMC-adjacent search makes sense.

Harris Health System — The Safety-Net System

Harris Health is Harris County's public system, running Ben Taub and Lyndon B. Johnson Hospital among others. It's currently mid-construction on a $2.9 billion replacement for the LBJ campus, a 12-story Level I trauma-capable facility meant to expand capacity in Northeast Harris County. Physicians and residents here often have different lifestyle priorities than private-system hires — public system compensation and schedules can shape a very different home search than a private academic medical center role.

UTHealth and Kelsey-Seybold — The Physician Group Side

If you're joining a physician organization rather than a hospital system directly — Kelsey-Seybold Clinic (now under Optum) is the most prominent example — your day-to-day location is often a clinic, not a hospital campus, and Kelsey-Seybold's dense clinic network means your actual daily commute might look nothing like a typical TMC-based search.

The One Question That Changes Everything

Ask your recruiter or new employer for your specific campus address before you start house hunting, not after. Houston's healthcare growth right now is happening well outside the traditional Texas Medical Center core — Cypress, Pearland, Humble, Sugar Land, and beyond all have real hospital investment underway. "I'm working in healthcare in Houston" and "I'm working at the TMC" are two very different home searches, and I'd rather have that specific address before we start touring anything.
