Harris County
Houston’s luxury commercial district and the residential corridors surrounding it — high-rises on Post Oak, estates in Tanglewood, and River Oaks just east.
West Loop · Post Oak Corridor · HISD & SBISD · 10–15 min Downtown
The Galleria is the commercial spine of west Houston — a million square feet of retail, two hotels, an ice rink, and a skyline of office towers along the 610 West Loop — and the neighborhoods surrounding it have grown up in its orbit. For buyers who want urban density, walkable luxury, and a short drive to both downtown and the Energy Corridor, Uptown lands near the top of the list.
The high-rise corridor along Post Oak Boulevard is the most visible part of the equation: buildings like the Cosmopolitan, the Montebello, and the Arabella offer full-service luxury condo living with hotel-style amenities, concierge, and views that make sense for executives, international buyers, and empty-nesters who want to trade square footage for simplicity. These are not the same product as a suburban townhome.
Tanglewood is one of the city’s most patrician addresses — a neighborhood of custom and estate homes just west of the Galleria, mature oak-canopied streets, old Houston money, and a residential calm that sits in almost deliberate contrast to the commercial energy a few blocks east.
River Oaks, just east of the 610 loop, is technically a separate neighborhood but functions as Uptown’s residential counterpart at the highest price tier — one of the most expensive and storied addresses in the entire city.
Know the Neighborhoods
Uptown is really several markets stacked on top of each other, from high-rise condos to multi-million-dollar estates. What you are buying depends on whether you want urban density, established residential character, or access to River Oaks without River Oaks prices.
The flagship condo corridor of Houston's Uptown district, with full-service buildings offering concierge, valet, rooftop amenities, and city views. The Cosmopolitan, Montebello, Arabella, and others draw executives, international buyers, and downsizers. Units from $300K to $2M+.
One of Houston's most established and prestigious residential neighborhoods, with custom and estate homes on tree-lined streets immediately west of the Galleria. Some of the city's oldest private wealth calls Tanglewood home. Homes from $700K to $4M+.
Technically separate but functionally Uptown's highest-price counterpart, River Oaks is one of Houston's oldest and most coveted addresses. Estate homes on large lots, limited turnover, and prices that run $1.5M to $10M+. A distinct market that rewards patient buyers.
A well-maintained neighborhood immediately south of the Galleria with strong HISD zoning and homes in the $500K to $1.2M range. Strong resale, proximity to the retail corridor, and a quieter residential feel than its neighbors to the north.
The residential pocket around the Highland Village shopping center, with townhomes and smaller homes at accessible Galleria-adjacent prices. A solid entry point into the Uptown catchment, typically $350K to $700K.
Streets on the northwest fringe of the Uptown market transition from HISD into Spring Branch ISD territory, bringing a different school landscape. Worth knowing before you get attached to a specific address.
The Uptown and Galleria area sits primarily in Houston ISD, with some northern streets crossing into Spring Branch ISD depending on exact location. The private school culture is exceptionally strong here: St. John's School, St. Francis Episcopal, the Kinkaid School, and others are within easy reach, and many buyers in Tanglewood and River Oaks have already built private school tuition into their household budget before they are thinking about real estate.
For buyers who want to rely on public schools, the options within HISD vary meaningfully by address. Some Tanglewood streets zone into Lamar High School and the associated cluster, which carries a strong reputation. I verify the specific campus for any address rather than assuming Galleria adjacency tells the whole story.

Getting Around
Location is part of the value proposition here. Here is how the rest of the metro lines up.
10 to 15 minutes east on I-10 or via the 610 Loop south, depending on your starting point. The managed toll lanes help during peak commute hours.
15 to 20 minutes west on I-10 — one of the shorter commutes in the market for Energy Corridor employees who want Galleria lifestyle rather than the suburban west side.
15 to 20 minutes south on the 610 loop, with Kirby as a surface alternative during off-peak hours.
Bush is 35 to 40 minutes north on I-610 and I-45. Hobby is 20 to 25 minutes south — a meaningful differentiator for frequent travelers who prefer Hobby’s terminal experience.
The Market & Your Move
Uptown covers several distinct markets that happen to share a zip code. Post Oak condos start around $300K for smaller units in older buildings and climb past $2M in the newer luxury towers with premium finishes and upper-floor views. Tanglewood custom estates run $700K to $4M+, with limited inventory and buyers who tend to be specific about what they want. River Oaks starts at $1.5M on the lower end and has no meaningful ceiling.
Afton Oaks and the Highland Village area give buyers entry into the Galleria catchment at more accessible levels, with established homes in the $500s and $600s that hold value well given their location.
As a LUXE-certified luxury specialist, I work in this market regularly. Luxury transactions here move on their own schedule — buyers who are willing to wait for the right inventory in Tanglewood or River Oaks are generally rewarded, while buyers who need to move on a tight timeline may find the Post Oak condo market more accommodating. Understanding which approach fits your situation is worth the conversation.

There are also a number of smaller boutique buildings closer to River Oaks that offer more residential scale. The right building depends on what you are optimizing for.
Tanglewood runs $700K to $4M+ for established custom homes. River Oaks starts around $1.5M and has no real ceiling for the estate-lot properties. Both markets have limited inventory and reward buyers who are patient and prepared.
